The American Mind in 1776
The American Mind in 1776
Human beings act on their basic presuppositions and convictions about the world, life and reality. For this reason, understanding the general worldview of Americans in 1776 is essential to our understanding of the Declaration of Independence, our War for Independence and our U.S. Constitution.
Understanding these documents and events should be important to us in the Twenty-First Century because they define who we are as the United States of America. They set us on a certain course that was meant to define and direct our life as a nation down through our generations. Without any true understanding of our roots, we will have nothing to measure whether we have been faithful to those roots or whether we have abandoned them.
Ideas do have consequences. Good ideas have beneficial consequences. Evil ideas have detrimental consequences. Were the ideas that inspired and informed the Declaration of Independence, the War for Independence and the U.S. Constitution, good or evil ideas?
